The Moments We Miss When We’re on Our Phones

We often think connection has to be big to matter — big conversations, big events, big transformations. But in reality, it’s built in the smallest units of time.

A shared laugh over a subtle facial expression. A pause before someone speaks. Eye contact that lasts just a second longer than usual.

These are micro moments — brief, often unnoticed interactions that shape how we feel, how we connect, and how we remember an experience.

The problem is, screens interrupt them.

Every glance at a notification breaks the flow. Every scroll pulls us out of the room. And over time, those missed moments add up — leaving us feeling oddly disconnected, even when we’re surrounded by people.

A screen-free space gives those moments back.

A different kind of quiz night

We created our screen-free quiz night for a simple reason: it gives people something to do together, without needing a screen.

Quizzes are familiar. Easy to step into. No pressure, no overthinking.

But this isn’t your typical pub quiz.

There are no phones allowed. No Googling. No second-screening. No quiet scrolling under the table or a timely visit to the loo to sneak a fact check.

Just memory, conversation, and a bit of collective guessing.

And in between the questions — the real reason we do it — are the micro moments.

People notice more. They listen properly. They build on each other’s answers instead of searching for them. They make up random answers that make others laugh and lead to further chats and smiles.

It’s not just about being present in a big, abstract way.

It’s about being present in the small moments — the ones we usually miss, until we don’t.

If you’ve ever felt that shift — or you’re curious about it — you’re always welcome to join us.

We host regular screen-free evenings in Bath, including our quiz nights, where the phones rest in our Tech Motel and the focus stays on what’s happening in the room.

Or, if you’d rather start smaller, try it yourself. Put your phone away for an evening, gather a few people, and see what happens.

You might be surprised by what you notice.

Real life is our obsession.
